1 — Chickens can dream.
According to research, chickens have REM (rapid eye movement) while sleeping, which means they can dream just like us! They also have a unique sleep stage called unihemispheric slow-wave sleep, in which one side of the brain is able to sleep and the other is awake. This implies that chickens could indeed sleep with one eye open, which is particularly useful for predator detection.
2 — Chickens have superior color vision to humans.
Chickens, like humans, have color vision and can see red, green, and blue light. What distinguishes chicken vision from ours is that they can see ultraviolet light, which produces the colors seen when using a black light!
3 — Hens talk to their chicks while they are still within their eggs!
Isn’t that adorable? When a mother hen lays eggs, she can make noises that chicks still incubating inside their eggs can hear and respond to. Even the chicks make tiny “peeps” from inside their eggs! Chickens use a variety of sounds to communicate with one another once they reach maturity.
4 — For 18 months, a headless chicken survived.
